Donning their HoopsFest uniforms featuring the city skyline, and with music star and basketball fan Dani Minogue sitting front row, the stage was set for a big night. The Lightning brought energy early, but it was Southside who finished stronger, pulling away for an 82–58 win.
Adelaide competed hard in the opening half, with Dallas Loughridge lighting it up for 20 first-half points. The second quarter turned scrappy and physical, and foul trouble followed, with Ashlee Strawbridge and Sharne Robati both on three fouls by halftime.
There were positive signs defensively through the pressure of Jazzy Fejo, while Maddy Freer contributed off the bench.
The Lightning came out of the sheds with intent. Steph Talbot opened the second half with a three-point play to level the score at 44–44, before a Tayla Brazel triple made it 49–49.
From there, momentum shifted quickly. Turnovers crept in, ball movement stalled, and the Flyers capitalised with a 14–0 run. Despite a Robati steal and free throws from Talbot to break the drought, Southside stretched the lead to 21 points.
Adelaide lifted its defensive pressure late but couldn’t convert at the offensive end, with the Flyers winning the second half 38–17.
With the sides set to meet twice more to close out the season, the Lightning will take key learnings from the loss and look to apply them in the rematch, with a clear focus on execution, ball movement, and consistency.
The Lightning return home Tuesday night to open the inaugural WNBL Pride Round against the Canberra Capitals at the SA State Basketball Centre.
